What is ground coffee?

In it's simplest terms, ground coffee is just roasted coffee beans that have been ground down into smaller particles, ready for brewing. But at Miles Tea & Coffee, ground coffee means so much more. It’s about heritage, family and a deep respect for every stage of the coffee-making journey – from the plantations where the beans are grown, to the West Country where we roast and blend, all the way to your cup.

Coffee itself has a fascinating origin story. Believed to have been first discovered in Ethiopia, coffee’s journey has taken it through centuries of tradition, trade and transformation. Today, it remains a drink of comfort, ritual and connection. At Miles, we embrace this global history while bringing it back local – crafting blends that reflect our values: approachable luxury, countryside calm and seaside charm.

One of the most common questions we hear: what is the difference difference between arabica and robusta coffee beans? These two are the main species of coffee beans used worldwide and each offers something unique. Arabica coffee beans are known for their smoother, more delicate flavour profile, often with subtle hints of fruit, florals and chocolate. Grown at higher altitudes, these beans are more sensitive to their environment and require careful cultivation, which is why they’re often considered the premium choice. They have less caffeine than robusta and a naturally lower bitterness, making them a staple in many of our best ground coffee blends.

Robusta, on the other hand, grows at lower altitudes and is hardier, with a stronger, more intense flavour and higher caffeine content. It brings depth and strength to a blend – something that’s appreciated by those who like a bolder cup. At Miles, we use a careful balance of arabica coffee beans and robusta coffee beans in some of our blends to create a rounded flavour experience. It’s all about knowing how to bring out the best in each bean type, using decades of roasting expertise and a passion for quality.

When it comes to how to ground coffee, it’s all about matching grind size to your brewing method. A coarse grind works well for French press, a medium grind suits drip coffee makers and pour-overs and a fine grind is perfect for espresso. But if you prefer to skip the grinding process at home, we’ve done the work for you. Our ground coffee beans are available in a range of blends, expertly prepared to suit a variety of brewing styles without sacrificing freshness or flavour.
