We're often asked:

Colombian coffee is widely considered some of the finest in the world due to the country’s perfect combination of high altitude, rich volcanic soil, and a unique microclimate that allows coffee trees to thrive. Situated along the equator, Colombia benefits from consistent tropical weather, steep mountainous terrain, and the perfect amount of annual rainfall.

Beyond geography, what makes it truly exceptional is the dedication to traditional farming methods. The vast majority of Colombian crops are grown on small, family-run hillside farms where the terrain is too steep for heavy machinery. This means every single cherry must be hand-picked at the absolute peak of ripeness. By ensuring that no under-ripe or over-ripe green beans enter the batch, producers maintain a remarkably consistent, high-quality standard that places premium single origin Colombian coffee in a league of its own.

Colombian coffee features a wonderfully balanced, smooth, and medium-bodied taste profile, often celebrated for its pleasant citrus acidity and rich, sweet notes of caramel, brown sugar, and milk chocolate. It is a highly approachable and comforting drink that lacks any harsh bitterness or heavy, earthy aftertastes.

Because Colombia spans multiple distinct mountain ranges, regional variations do exist. Coffees from the central region tend to be incredibly balanced with clean, fruity undertones, while southern crops lean towards a brighter acidity and floral aroma. When roasted to a medium profile - like our Cheerfully Colombian coffee - you get a remarkably smooth flavour that tastes fantastic as a crisp black filter coffee or blended with a splash of milk for a velvety breakfast treat.

Colombian coffee is made using a meticulous, traditional process that involves selective hand-harvesting, a wet-processing (washed) method, and careful sun-drying to preserve the bean's clean and vibrant characteristics. Every step of the journey is handled with absolute precision to ensure the delicate sugars inside the bean are perfectly preserved.

The production journey follows these essential stages:

Hand-Picking: Farmers selectively hand-pick only the bright red, perfectly ripe coffee cherries from the trees, leaving the green ones to ripen further.

Depulping & Washing: The outer skin of the cherry is removed by a machine, and the sticky beans inside are placed in water tanks to ferment naturally. This "washed process" strips away the fruit cleanly, which is the secret behind the crisp, bright flavour profile Colombia is famous for.

Sun-Drying: The washed beans are spread out on large open-air patios or raised beds to dry naturally under the tropical sun until they reach the perfect moisture level.

Roasting: Once exported, we carefully roast these beans to a medium level. This specific Colombian coffee roast profile locks in the bean's natural, smooth sweetness while allowing its delicate, refreshing fruit characteristics to shine through beautifully in your cup.
