We're often asked:

The most famous tea in Sri Lanka is Ceylon tea, globally celebrated for its exceptional quality, bright clarity, and vibrant flavour profile. "Ceylon" is the traditional, historic name for Sri Lanka from its colonial era, and the island nation has proudly retained this name for its tea industry as a prestigious mark of premium global quality.

Sri Lanka's unique geography allows tea to be grown across various altitudes, giving rise to world-famous regional styles. For example, the mist-shrouded peaks of Nuwara Eliya produce a light, delicate, and almost champagne-like tea, while the historic Dimbula district yields exceptionally crisp and bright crops. The most famous grades, such as our premium Ceylon Orange Pekoe Loose Tea, are highly sought after by tea connoisseurs. "Orange Pekoe" does not refer to an orange flavour, but rather signifies a traditional grading system indicating a high-quality, whole-leaf tea picked from the very top of the tea plant, ensuring an incredibly refined and sophisticated drinking experience.

Sri Lanka is world-renowned for producing exceptional black teas, but it also produces small, highly prized quantities of exquisite Ceylon green and rare white "Silver Tips" teas. However, it is the island's classic, medium-bodied black tea that remains the absolute signature export of the nation. The country's diverse microclimates mean that even within the black tea category, the leaves offer an incredible variety of body and strength depending on whether they are grown on the low coastal plains or high in the mountains.

In our collection, we feature two magnificent ways to experience this famous origin:

The Crisp Daily Classic - Miles Ceylon Loose Tea: A beautifully reliable, high-quality broken leaf blend that infuses quickly to deliver a bright, golden, and uplifting cup. It is the perfect choice for a sophisticated morning or afternoon refreshment.

The Elegant Whole Leaf - Miles Ceylon Orange Pekoe Loose Tea: Crafted using long, beautifully rolled whole leaves. Because whole leaves release their natural compounds more slowly during brewing, this tea offers a lighter, incredibly smooth, and highly aromatic cup that is perfect for slow, mindful sipping.

Sri Lankan tea is famous for its crisp, bright, and lively taste profile, typically offering a beautiful balance of brisk citrus notes, a hint of sweet spice, and a clean, refreshing finish. Unlike heavy, malty varieties from other parts of the world - such as a deep Indian Assam - a classic Ceylon brew is celebrated for its wonderful clarity, lighter body, and uplifting nature.

Because of its vibrant characteristics, Ceylon tea possesses a light-to-medium body that feels wonderfully smooth on the palate. While low-grown Sri Lankan teas from the Ruhuna region tend to be dark, rich, and full-bodied, our high-grown whole-leaf Ceylon Orange Pekoe Loose Tea coaxes out a delicate, slightly floral aroma with a beautifully sweet undertone. This exceptionally clean favourite taste profile makes Sri Lankan tea incredibly versatile; it tastes magnificent when served completely black to appreciate its nuanced crispness, yet possesses enough character to hold up beautifully to a light splash of milk.
