What is the difference between Chai tea and regular tea?

Chai tea and regular tea differ in their ingredients, preparation methods, and flavor profiles. Chai tea, also known as masala chai, is a spiced tea originating from India that typically includes a blend of black tea, various spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger, milk, and sweeteners like sugar or honey. The brewing process involves simmering the ingredients together to create a rich and aromatic beverage with a warm and spicy flavor profile. On the other hand, regular tea refers to pure teas like black, green, white, or oolong tea made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant without added spices or milk. These teas are brewed by steeping the leaves in hot water to extract their natural flavours, resulting in a more subtle taste compared to chai tea. Overall, while both beverages offer delightful experiences, chai tea stands out for its unique blend of spices and creamy texture that sets it apart from traditional teas.

Is Chai tea good for you?

Chai tea, a blend of black tea, spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves, combined with milk and a sweetener, is not only a flavourful beverage but also offers several potential health benefits. The black tea in chai is a rich source of antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage and reduce inflammation in the body. Additionally, the various spices used in chai have been linked to potential health benefits such as improved digestion, reduced inflammation, and enhanced immune function. The combination of these ingredients may also provide a soothing effect on the digestive system.

How do you brew Chai tea?

Brewing loose leaf Chai tea is a delightful experience that can be easily achieved by following a few simple steps. To start, bring fresh water to a boil in a kettle. Once the water has reached a rolling boil, allow it to cool slightly before pouring it over the loose leaf Chai tea in a teapot or infuser. The general guideline is to use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per cup of water. Let the tea steep for about 3-5 minutes, depending on your preference for strength. After steeping, strain the tea to remove the leaves and enjoy your fragrant and flavorful cup of Chai tea. Feel free to add milk or sweeteners according to your taste preferences. Brewing loose leaf Chai tea is not only a delicious ritual but also a wonderful way to relax and unwind with a warm and aromatic beverage.

How to brew:

Tea: 1 heaped teaspoon | Water temp: 100°C | Brewing Time: 4-5 minutes.

Method:

Capture the heady mix of spice and tea by bringing filtered or freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place one heaped teaspoon of loose tea for every 200–260ml of water into your cup or teapot. Pour the boiling water over the leaves, cover, and allow to infuse for an optimum time of 4 to 5 minutes. While the tea can be steeped for up to 10 minutes according to your taste preference, the recommended time for a balanced cup is 4 to 5 minutes.

Goes well with:
Milk, sugar or lemon.

Pro tip:
For the most authentic experience, brew this tea with a mixture of water and milk (or a milk alternative). Simmering the leaves and spices directly in milk with a touch of honey or sugar helps to draw out the richness of the spices and creates that creamy, "soul-warming" texture that Chai is famous for.
