Grinding coffee beans is an essential step in the coffee brewing process, as it helps to release the flavours and aromas locked within the beans. There are several methods for grinding coffee beans, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
Burr Grinder:
One of the most common methods is to use a burr grinder. Burr grinders consist of two abrasive surfaces that crush the beans into uniform particles. This method allows for precise control over the grind size, resulting in a more even extraction and better-tasting coffee.
Another popular method is using a blade grinder. Blade grinders work by spinning sharp blades that chop the beans into smaller pieces. While blade grinders are generally less expensive than burr grinders, they tend to produce less consistent results and can generate heat that may affect the flavour of the coffee.
For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, manual grinding methods such as using a hand grinder or mortar and pestle can also be used. These methods require some effort and time but allow for greater control over the grind size.
Regardless of the method chosen, it's important to grind coffee beans just before brewing to preserve their freshness and flavour. The optimal grind size will depend on the brewing method being used, with coarser grinds typically used for methods like French press, and finer grinds for espresso. Overall, selecting the right grinding method and achieving the desired grind size is crucial in producing a delicious cup of coffee with rich flavours and aromas.
The shelf life of coffee beans depends on many factors, including bean type, storage conditions and roasting conditions. Typically, here at Miles, our coffee beans stay fresh for up to 13 months when stored securely in a cool, dark, airtight container. It’s important to remember that coffee beans will be at their ‘peak’ flavour up to and around 2 months from roasting and there is potential that after that time, they’re taste and aroma may change. One way to keep your coffee tasting fresh is to only grind the beans when you’re about to use them. You can even store your coffee beans in the freezer as this can help preserve their quality but you’ll need an airtight container to stop moisture and odours from other items affecting the beans. The best way, in our opinion, is to buy coffee beans inline without how much you use approximately every 6-8 weeks as this will ensure their freshness when making that cup of coffee you desperately crave!
How you store your coffee beans is crucial to the finished cup of coffee! We recommend an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Containers than don’t absorb odours or flavours are perfect – such as glass or ceramic, whereas plastic tubs can affect the taste of the beans. Air, light, heat and moisture can all have negative impacts on the freshness of your coffee beans and so we advise to keep them away from direct sunlight and areas of heat in the kitchen such as the oven. Whilst you can preserve the freshness of your coffee beans by storing them in a refrigerator or freezer, we would only advise this if absolutely necessary because moisture and other aromas from these can find their way into the containers and affect the beans – we would highly advise that any container used is completely airtight! The best way, in our opinion, is to buy coffee beans inline without how much you use approximately every 6-8 weeks as this will ensure their freshness when making that cup of coffee you desperately crave!
