Autumn trails
Head outside and witness nature’s colourful celebration of the changing Season…
The clocks have gone back and the days are feeling shorter, but there’s nothing stopping you from making the most of them! Nature shows off all her jewelled colours this season, against the changing backdrops of crisp, sunny days, foggy mornings and dark grey clouds that make the golden leaves pop. Autumn is a beautiful season to get out and about, exploring different nature trails and having little adventures.
Haldon Forest
Within the 3,500 acres of picturesque woodland at Haldon Forest you’ll find a range of walking and cycling trails. Just outside of Exeter, there are tons of activities to take part in – spot wildlife in clearings, sign up for an orienteering course or try your hand (or balance!) on a Segway trial.
Portheras Cove coastal path
This coastal walk will blow away the cobwebs! Follow the rugged coastal path from Pendeen, passing the lighthouse, to Portheras Cove. The circular walk begins at the Carn Galver Tin Mine and finishes up inland, across fields. Take a flask of refreshing Berry Berry iced tea with you, this walk makes for thirsty work.
Watersmeet
Watersmeet House, once a fishing lodge, is a National Trust property in Lynmouth. It sits proudly at the side of the water, where the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water meet, hence the name. Walk along the river, through the woodland, all the way down to the coast. All of the trees bright colours reflect into the river, making this a charming autumn walk.
Little Solsbury Hill
From the top of Little Solsbury Hill, you can take in views of Bath city and its surrounding countryside. This walk provides the perfect place to enjoy an autumn picnic on a sunny day – pack up plenty of blankets, a warm flask of soup, sausage rolls, toffee apple cake and plenty of West Country Original Tea to keep you cosy.
Dunster Castle
Wander through the quaint village of Dunster and enjoy the grounds of Dunster Castle and the changing colours throughout autumn, taking shelter in the house if the weather takes a cold or wet turn. If you visit in the lead up to Christmas Dunster village and castle will be decked out for the festive season.
Quantock Hills
As you walk across the Quantock Hills keep an eye out for the wild Exmoor ponies that roam here. The area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has panoramic views of countryside, woodland and Somerset’s coastline.
Golitha Falls
Follow alongside the River Fowey in Cornwall as it makes its way through Draynes Woods and spot the series of cascades and waterfalls known as Golitha Falls. There is a circular walk and other marked trails for you to follow at the nature reserve.
Stourhead
View natures most beautiful colour palette at Stourhead during the autumn. The landscaped gardens of this National Trust site show off their warmed, bronzed tones throughout the season. The colours enhance the beauty of the lake and Gothic cottage – Mother Nature is definitely showing off here!
Grand Western Canal
Meander along the Great Western Canal, which stretches over 11 miles through the countryside and villages. Best known for its horse-drawn barges in the summer, this is a lovely, quiet walk or cycle route in the autumn.
Core Hill Woods
Skip through rustling piles of fallen leaves at Core Hill Wood, just north of Sidmouth. Take a flask of Bright and Breezy coffee and breakfast muffins with you and start your day with a woodland trek.
